LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Set Visit Pt 2: A day on location [VIDEO]

Throughout the day as the other actors rested inside a tent behind the film crew, Victor Garber placed his chair outside overlooking the scene and continuously entertained us and the crew alike. He made us laugh discussing the running joke of the day – how best to modify his director’s chair to suit his personal needs (the crew ultimately added a table!). With his charming persona it’s easy to see why he is so popular among his colleagues.

With such a wealth of work under his belt from Titanic to Alias, we asked Victor his thoughts on the art of acting. “For me acting is really about communicating together in person and listening to what they are saying, so you can respond to it rather than having a idea…acting is reacting. If you try to work things out too much you’re in trouble because it looks fake – for me anyway, everybody works differently. I don’t really think about doing it, I just have to be confident and know when I’m ready.” He doesn’t get phased acting around a spaceship (Waverider) that isn’t actually there. “You just use your imagination” he puts it simply.

Do you know straight away when you’ve done a scene that doesn’t work?

“Pretty much. I know when it works. I can feel when I’ve hit something that’s felt right.”

There  was also a 2nd unit in the adjacent field shooting a stunt scene, which aired in the promo.

Stunt doubles were used to depict Hawkgirl swooping down to fight the villain Cronos. The stunt doubles for Hawkman, Atom and White Canary were also on set that day. It was sometimes difficult to determine whether it was the actor or their double shooting the scene. Hawkgirl was wired up to a harness lifted in the air then swung forward to impact with Cronos. It was impressive to watch, even in it’s raw unfinished version.

Taking a break in the snack shack which housed all imaginable drinks and snacks, including Brandon Routh’s Bulletproof coffee, we met Peter Francis James. A RADA trained actor (like Brandon) and lecturer at England’s prestigious Oxford University, we discovered he’s entertaining on and off screen, knowledgeable about everything from football to the Dutch National Anthem!

Two main scenes were scheduled to be shot that day – the other with Caity Lotz, Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell – and a car. Due to the earlier delay they didn’t appear till the evening and went almost straight to shoot, leaving us time only for a quick meet and greet with these Legends. Check out my mini-interview with the White Canary earlier in the year:

DP David shared a film crew saying: “The most exciting day of your life is the first day on a film set, the most boring day of your life is the second day on a film set.” So perhaps it’s best we only stayed for one day, but I wish we could have seen more because from what I saw LoT is shaping up to be an exciting show about charismatic misfits, time-travelling spaceships and epic missions to defeat evil – who doesn’t want to see that?
